Mabon: Shadows, Balance, and the Turning of the Wheel

Mabon: Shadows, Balance, and the Turning of the Wheel

Today marks Mabon, the Autumn Equinox — a moment of balance when day and night stand equal before the wheel turns further toward darkness. It’s a threshold, a liminal point in the year, and one that feels especially powerful for me this season.

The deeper I go in my witchcraft practice, the more each turn of the wheel resonates. This year, Mabon feels charged in a way I can’t ignore. The world has been heavy, and witches (and humanity at large) have been asked to carry so much. That weight has pushed me deeper into my shadow work. I’ve been confronting what was long waiting to be faced, stepping into the work that needed to be done — and I have. In that process, I’ve found the medicine in the darkness, the teachings that only shadow can offer.

At its core, Mabon is about:

  • Harvest and Gratitude 🌾
Traditionally, this is the second harvest festival, when the fruits of our labor are gathered. It’s a time to give thanks for what has grown and sustained us.
  • Balance and Reflection ⚖️
The equinox reminds us of balance — light and dark, inner and outer, giving and receiving. What is ready to rest? What deserves more light?
  • Release and Preparation 🍂
Just as the trees begin to let go of their leaves, we too are called to release what no longer serves us as we prepare for the longer nights ahead.

This year, I feel that release more keenly than ever. My shadow work game is strong, and it makes this threshold feel like both a reckoning and a renewal. Darkness is approaching, but it doesn’t feel like something to fear — it feels like a sacred teacher.

So tonight, I’ll honor the harvest of what I’ve grown, thank the shadows for their lessons, and step with intention into the waning half of the year.

Blessed Mabon, witches. May your balance be steady, your release be gentle, and your harvest be sweet. 🌙🍷🍎
